United we bargain, divided we beg!
Local 381 consists of the hourly maintenance, operations and lab employees employed by the Lion Oil Refinery located in El Dorado AR.
A brief word to new employees
After your probationary period, you will have the opportunity to join our union. We aren't socialists or communists. We have a philosophy of moderated capitalism in line with Biblical ideals such as:
Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their labor. For if they fall, one will lift up his companion. But woe to him who is alone when he falls, for he has no one to help him up. Though one may be overpowered by another, two can withstand him. And a threefold cord is not quickly broken. -- Ecclesiastes 4:9, 10, 12 (New King James Version)
The Union, IUOE 381, is the 381st local chapter of the International Union of Operating Engineers, and member of the AFL-CIO. This means that we have a small group with local focus with a large organization to help us navigate labor law strategy.
Functions That Work For You
The Company has an obligation to produce profits for its shareholders. Thus, they have the drive to minimize the cost of labor. Without collective bargaining, each employee has very little leverage to bargain for his just pay, and no real platform from which to present his case. With collective bargaining, there is a time and place for discussion of work rules and bargaining for benefits and wages. And there is a driving force for each party to reach a contract agreement: Each employee wants a contract to ensure his continued employment. The Company wants a contract to keep operating.
When you have an issue that needs to be addressed, the Union has a Steward in your work group who can take it to the Company and to the Union Officers. There is a procedure to make your voice heard, even to the degree of legally binding grievance and arbitration hearings.
We Have Your Back
In the hectic and complex work environment, it is unfortunately too common to get "in trouble" with the Company. If you are called on the carpet, a Union Representative will accompany you to provide witness, defense and moral support. And if you are not treated fairly, we will help you make it right.
You will be contacted by a Union Representative, and if you agree to join, you will need to fill out some forms, one of which will provide for dues to be deducted from your paycheck: (approx. 0.6 X one base hourly wage. e.g. 0.6 X $20 = $12 per paycheck).
Technically, as Arkansas is an open shop right to work state, Local 381 will represent you whether you join or not. But, the many dues paying members would appreciate it when you join. Currently we have over 90% of eligible workers as active members.
Once you are a member, you are encouraged to attend monthly meetings. You will receive periodic newsletters. You will have an additional funeral benefit.
We are asking you to join IUOE 381, not to hide behind, but to add our strength to yours, for everyone's mutual good and support. Browse this site for more information, announcements, directions to the meeting hall and past newsletters.
