Contract Negotiations began July 8th, 2014
07/31/2014-Tentative agreement reached in negotiations
Dear Brothers and Sisters
Update concerning the time alloted between “question and answer” day on Monday and voting day on Tue..
A number of calls and concerns have been made as to the time needed/wanted to process the changed items. So that everyone feels comfortable and agreeable, we will put together such items and times to be available from Sat-Mon.
With all efforts having been put towards a fair and agreeable contract and taking care of any detailed oriented items that affect us all, the same effort will be put into making sure the body has enough time to go over the changed or increased benefits and all other items pertaining to the contract. Although a minimum of 24hrs between “question and answer day” and “voting day” is a time allowable and suggested by other unions, it will benefit everyone better at Lion Oil to have a few day’s to go over these items prior to voting.
Question and Answer day’s will be: Sat. Aug 2nd , Sun. Aug. 3rd and Mon. Aug. 4th from 2pm until approximately 7 or 8pm. The workmens committee or part of such, will be at the Union Hall to answer any and all questions concerning the contract at these designated times. There will be sections pulled from the contract that have been changed or added to for your information. Hopefully this will give everyone ample time to make an informed decision come voting day Tuesday Aug. 5th.
Please try to contact your friends and/or co-workers that may be off or on vacation this weekend to drop by the Union Hall on one of these days if at all possible.

Are unions really needed?
If the world were perfect and all employers were fair, honest and shared fully with workers, maybe not. But even if employers were perfect, workers might still want to organize. Humans organize themselves into groups that make sense to them. Human beings should have the right to participate in decisions that affect their lives. Workers care deeply about their jobs and want a voice in workplace decisions.
We live in an economic society devoted more to bottom-line profit than to people. Most corporate decisions that hurt workers are not driven by a desire to hurt workers, but rather a desire to increase profits or compete in a very competitive global market. Individual workers need an organized voice to challenge the priorities of companies and our economic system.
In our society, unions are the primary vehicle for worker representation in the workplace. Over the years, unions have proved themselves as advocates for justice in the society. Many workers view unions as advocates for justice for the future.
